2016 ESFA Womens Cup Final - Wednesday 13th July, 2016 - 7:30pm Hensley Athletic Field.
It was the coldest day and with darkness came freezing temperatures. We don’t care what the BOM said, out on Hensley it felt like -10 degrees. Lucky the football was heating up!
With two powerhouse clubs ready to battle for the ESFA Womens Cup, Coogee United AAW2 and Dunbar Rovers AAW gave the blanketed, scarves and beanie wearing crowd, some entertaining football.
With Coogee United taking the lead in the first ten minutes, Dunbar came out after their half time pep talk ramping up the productivity and scored a nicely placed equaliser. Like many finals, both teams continued their attack and brilliant defence and therefore could not be separated in 90 minutes leading to a further 30 minutes of football. The crowd was certainly getting their fair share of football.
Coogee United were able to take the lead in the 109th minute but with the Golden Goal rule not in play, there was still 11 more minutes for Coogee to go further ahead or Dunbar to equalise.
When the final whistle blew at 120 minutes, Coogee United AAW2 were crowned ESFA Womens Cup champions!
With the Coogee United AAW2 currently leading the ESFA Competition ladder, we wonder if this is just the first of the silverware collection for 2016.
Thank you to the match officials on the night and to all the supporters from both sides for championing the ESFA Womens Cup and the continual strength of ESFA womens football.
